How IFS therapy works with addictions: a human approach to our internal system

With IFS therapy, addiction is seen not as the enemy, but as a part that has an important role in the system - and that can be transformed through understanding, connecting and caring.

Addiction treatment through IFS therapy

IFS (Internal Family Systems) is a therapy that works extremely effectively with addictions.

Rumyana Georgieva is the only practitioner in Bulgaria certified by IFS Institute US.

Before opening Joy Yoga Sofia and practicing here, Rumyana was part of the team of the Belgian addiction treatment clinic Affect 2Uwhere the method of addiction treatment is IFS therapy.

A humane and compassionate approach

The IFS approach is extremely humane and compassionate.

He sees addiction as one of our parts trying (in its way) to help other parts of us – the parts that carry the pain and trauma.

Addictions as Part of an Internal System

Addictions is Part of a system (internal dynamics), for example:

And again – the pain becomes even stronger: Anxiety, Use, Inner Critic…

And the knot is tightening ever tighter.

What do we do in therapy?

What we do in therapy is that we start to loosen the knot – through getting to know, befriending and helping the parts.

Relief and long-lasting effect

For example: working on relaxing the Inner Critic immediately affects the way we feel.

The therapy is not easy or painless, BUT you will begin to feel relief after the first session.
IFSis not a therapy that lasts long over time.

It gives you tools that you can use outside of the therapy session to help yourself.
In most cases 5, 10, 15 sessions are enough to solve the problem the client is coming in for therapy with.
